Table header row or -column has empty cells

Modified on Mon, 5 Oct at 1:53 PM

Table headers provide important context for screen reader users and the lack thereof makes it difficult for them to interpret and navigate the table.
Without the information that can be conveyed in a table header row or -column cell the relationship between said row or -column's entries becomes unclear to the visually impaired.

The solution is to add text in the empty header row and/or -column. It may require rethinking the table and what the author wishes to convey with it.

Consider if the table's context and contents necessitates Header Row, First Column or both is set in Table Design.

Tip:

Often elements of the other cell(s) next to an empty header row cell can be moved above the table to a descriptive title instead.
